12 Chinese Brands in the Global Top 100 Most Valuable Brands

A total of twelve Chinese brands made it into this year’s Top 100 Most Valuable Brands, in the yearly report by WPP. Six of the top 10 Asian brands are Chinese brands, surpassing Japan and Korea. It includes brands such as, China mobile (#10), ICBC (#16), Tencent (#21), China Construction Bank (#22), Baidu (#33), Agricultural Bank of China (#37), China Life (#57), Bank of China (#58), PetroChina (#65), Sinopec (#67), Moutai (#73), and Pingan (#84).  The combined brand value of the brands mentioned in the list is valued at over $270 billion.

However, most of the Chinese brands on the list are state-owned enterprises. This year, there was a decrease in both the number and total brand value of Chinese brands, indicating a bottleneck in Chinese brands’ growth. According to experts such as, David Roth (CEO, The Store WPP) “Chinese brands need to not only be more technologically innovative, but also more international.”

WPP further analyses the performance of the Top 50 Most Valuable Chinese Brands 2013 in a separate in-depth report. It shows the Top 50 Chinese brands experienced a 1.6% decline in brand value to US$320.2 billion, the first decline in the three years that the study has been conducted. The decline resulted primarily from pressure on revenue and profits, the financial components of the brand value equation. The decrease in the rate of growth of China’s economy didn’t help future forecasts.

However, three categories appreciated in brand value. Technology rose 35%, followed by the traditional Chinese liquor baijiu, up 19%, and beer up 17%. Brand Contribution actually increased. Brand Contribution is the component of brand value driven by brand alone stripped of any other factors, such as financial performance. Of the Top 50 Most Valuable Chinese Brands, 14 increased in value, 30 declined and two remained unchanged.
