In recent years, the offline retail industry has come under pressure from various quarters, be it increases in rent and wages or the onslaught of e-commerce. Offline retailers are facing unprecedented challenges. Business in many Chinese outlets is dismal and as the status quo changes, so too does the structure of the industry.
However, according to a report by the consultancy McKinsey, which cites Chinese government data, the Chinese retail industry grew by 10 per cent in 2015, a figure backed by the still-resolute consumer confidence index. So how can offline retailers resolve their predicament? Does the experience economy offer a way out? Can they transform successfully?
The answers to these questions, as well as the opportunities they throw up, will be explored in a series of discussions at this year’s UK-China Retail Forum in Guangzhou, which will be held on the afternoon of Tuesday 13 September.

The Great British Brands Festival: Guangzhou leg
This year's Retail Forum is being held to coincide with CBBC's Great British Brands Festival in Guangzhou, which will be held in Happy Valley Shopping Centre for 10 days from 9 to 18 September. This is an excellent opportunity to explore a new market or boost your brand image.
If you have a British-made or British-designed consumer brand that you would like to exhibit and sell at the festival, we welcome your participation. CBBC can help with logistics such as arranging onsite sales staff to represent your company, and you will be able to attend the Retail Forum in the middle of the week.
For details of the festival click here or contact us at the address below as soon as possible. This year there are also further legs in Shenzhen and Taiyuan - see www.GBBF.uk for details of them.
Attendance at the forum is free of charge but advance registration is required.
Contact Rita Huang in Guangzhou as soon as possible to reserve a seat at the forum or a place at the wider brands festival (fees vary):
