21st Century Business Herald reports that Ren Zhiqiang, chairman of Huayuan Property, has proposed a "beer index" by which to monitor unemployment among migrant workers. He suggests that a rise in the index in rural areas might indicate an increased number of workers returning home to drown their sorrows having been laid off.

The newspaper describes his idea as "idiotic" and points out that migrant workers may be returning home not to rue their redundancy, but rather may be able to afford more beer because they have taken up employment in their home towns and their spending power has been boosted accordingly.
