Stephen Twining takes part in Speakers Series

In the inaugural session of the British Chamber’s Speakers Series, brand ambassador Mr Stephen Twining, the tenth generation of the Twining family, spoke about the company’s evolution from a single teahouse to a global brand name.
After whizzing through 5000 years of tea history, from its accidental inception by Chinese Emperor Shennong to how Twinings gained the Royal Warrant granted by Queen Victoria, Stephen discussed the company’s expertise in buying and blending tea, and the challenges and successes of bringing the Twinings brand to China. After the talk and Q&A session, guests sampled a range of Twinings tea served alongside traditional British scones and biscuits.

Stephen Phillips, CEO of the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) attended the inaugural China-Eurasia Expo in Urumqi along with seven CBBC and BritCham member companies. Hosted by the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC), the delegation discovered a number of niche yet significant opportunities in importing agriculture machinery. Mining companies fared equally well; Xinjiang has rich reserves of petroleum, natural gas, coal, gold, chromium, copper, nickel, rare metal, salt mineral and other minerals.
“It was evident from our meetings that there is a strong desire to engage with international partners, and currently the international competition is not as fierce as in other parts of China.
