Three years ago, a national reform strategy was introduced at The Third Plenary Session of 18th CPC Central Committee. The economy has been growing in steady mid-single digits since, and the trend is set to stay for a while. The faith of investors has been put under test.

The economic reform on the supply side, which emphasizes on cutting excessive industrial capacity, destocking, de-leveraging, lowering corporate costs and improving weak links, has paced into a zone where conflicts begin to float due to multilateral interests. It’s been a challenge coordinating short and long-term goals amid the economic ‘new normal’ situations.

The decision makers promised to take a steady pace on implementing the supply-side reform and accommodating the macroeconomic policy, and would not drop stimulus bombs. Efforts will be made to sustain a stable economy. Meanwhile the turbulence in equity markets, the swings on economic policies, and the uncertainties in corporate reform are not unseen. The government wishes to limit their intervention on the market. But at this particular time, the government has the responsibility to play an active role in stabilizing the economy and to make sure the market doesn’t go too far off the track.

The many uncertainties in policies sprout worries over the government’s ability to enforce structural reforms on the world’s second largest economy and to achieve transparency and legally binding mechanism in a socialist market economy.

The economic environment helps shape investor confidence and influences their decisions. Yet investor sentiment plays a critical role in deciding where the economy is heading. Communication between decision makers and investors is much needed to renew the faith in the market, and most importantly, to help investors make better decisions.

This year’s iFeng Finance Summit, with themes in ‘Market and Decisions’ and ‘Investor Sentiment’, is a channel for multilateral discussions. We hope it will deepen understanding and trust between decision makers and investors.

For the past four years, ifeng.com and Phoenix TV have hosted four Finance Summits which brought together top minds in the political, academic and business communities and have achieved great success. Past topics include reforms and outlook of Chinese economy following 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
