On Wednesday 6 November, we will be holding a Joint Chamber seminar at the Hilton Beijing, at which both members and non-members are welcome.
In recent years China’s financial system has changed beyond all recognition. Once dominated by the major banks, the financial ecosystem has quickly evolved to include newer, innovative institutions that have played an increasingly important role in credit formation.
These institutions – China’s shadow banks – helped keep economic growth speeding ahead by keeping the credit flowing, even as other economies struggled to recover from the global financial crisis. But they have also helped swell the country’s government and corporate debt to a degree that is starting to cause concerns that China might face its own economic reckoning.
Our speaker, Mr Dinny McMahon, will speak about how China’s shadow banking sector evolved, the risks it poses to the country’s financial stability, and the difficulties in reining it in.
About the speaker
Dinny McMahon has been based in Beijing with the Wall Street Journal for four years, covering China’s banking and finance sector. Prior to moving to Beijing he worked for four years at Dow Jones Newswires in Shanghai where he covered foreign exchange. Mr McMahon is a graduate of the University of New South Wales where he studied economics and Chinese. He also studied international relations at Johns Hopkins University’s Centre for Chinese and American Studies in Nanjing.
