The British Chamber and China-Britain Business Council joined forces with AmCham China on 23 March to hold the China CSR Awards 2016 at The Opposite House in Beijing.

Judged by a panel of experienced names in the CSR field, including Clare Pearson, chair of the British Chamber in China and international development director of DLA Piper, Carma Elliot CMG OBE, China director at the British Council, and Wang Liwei, CEO of the China Development Foundation, the Awards recognised companies that have made a contribution to creating a fairer society in China.

The 13th Five-Year Plan has seen a shift in focus from "hardware" such as roads and infrastructure to "software" like the environment, education and living standards for the least well off, making CSR critical to good business in China in 2016.

Chamber chair Clare Pearson explained: “The CEO must be seen to be leading from the front. He or she needs to select a topic in line with the 13th Five-Year Plan, set up a corporate foundation to fund the cause and then encourage staff to spend time on the project by connecting it to their performance and pay.”

13 companies received their awards on the evening in front of Chinese and overseas media, with a further 10 receiving honourable mentions for their contributions to China’s social evolution.

Each applicant was marked out of a maximum of 4 points for each question, relative to the size of the organisation:

1) What impact does the project have on the issue addressed?
2) How scalable is the project?
3) How sustainable is the project?
4) How well does the project leverage the resources of the institution?
5) How professionally is the project implemented?
