Advocacy and Policy Manager

Roles & Responsibilities

Advocacy reports, initiatives and presentations

  • Drive the production of the Chamber’s annual keystone advocacy reports, the British Business in China: Position Paper and the British Business in China: Sentiment survey, including project management, research, roundtable discussions, survey creation and analysis, planning, drafting, and reviewing.
  • Organise and lead industry roundtables and/or events for key sectors, as well as conduct interviews with members for advocacy initiatives.
  • Address members’ advocacy needs in response to current events and/or ongoing issues through the production of ad hoc reports and pulse surveys (such as data security, COVID-19 impact reports, net-zero initiatives etc.).
  • Track major policy announcements from Chinese regulators and global developments relevant to British businesses in China.
  • Present findings of advocacy reports to relevant stakeholders including the British and Chinese government, working closely with the British Chamber’s Executive Committee in the shaping of key messaging.

Policy and Knowledge projects and events

  • Oversee and drive policy and/or knowledge pillar for the Chamber through events, policy insights, and weekly China in 5 posts.
  • Preparation of comms copy for relevant knowledge and industry events for use on BritCham social media channels including LinkedIn and Wechat, tailoring according to audience and channel.

Media and external relations

  • Lead the British Chamber’s media engagement, including developing, maintaining and strengthening relationships with key media outlets, and drafting responses to requests for comments and/or arranging for comment from the appropriate team or Executive Committee member as necessary.
  • Preparation of press releases and official communications around advocacy initiatives, including media invitations to Chamber events/meetings.

Membership Support

  • Work closely with the Membership manager in order to identify and recruit potential members for the Chamber.
  • Engage and manage relationships with member companies and other external stakeholders.
  • Utilise membership expertise for driving Policy Insights and for speaking opportunities for advocacy events.

  • Adept at project management including resource allocation and working to deadlines.
  • Willingness to take initiative at work.
  • A strong sense of responsibility.
  • A deep and demonstrated interest in the UK-China relationship and China’s policy environment.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A bachelors degree in a relative discipline such as international relations, public policy, economics, business or law.
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of work experience.
  • Native English speaker with a high level of Chinese proficiency, in reading and speaking.
  • Strong research, analysis and report writing skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good understanding of China’s political and economic environment, as well as the regulatory landscape in which foreign businesses operate.
  • Knowledge of China’s industrial development is a plus.
